I hope you have gone through my previous posts in the Yoga Series, if not here is a link to the basic Yoga poses. This post will shed light on Vrikshasana or the Tree pose. Vriksha in Sanskrit translates to Tree and asana means pose, this pose imitates a tree standing tall.
How to do the Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)
- With arms straight at the side of your body, Stand tall
- By bending your right knee, place the right foot high up on your left thigh, you may lose balance but only keep the foot as far as possible and do not push yoursef.
- The sole of the foot should be placed firmly near the root of the thigh, or wherever possible but must be flat on the thigh
- Your left leg must be straight and your body must be balanced on just one leg.
- Find your balance, breathe in deeply and gracefully raise your arms over your head from the side. Bring your palms together above your head which would look like a ‘Namaste’.
- Keep your gaze steady to maintain a steady balance and Look straight ahead in front of you.
- Make sure that your spine is straight. Your body must be taut, like a stretched elastic band. Continue breathing deeply; relax your body with each breath.
- Exhaling slowly, bring your hands down to the side of your body.
- Gently release the right leg.
- Standing tall as you did repeat this pose with the left leg on the right thigh.

Caution to be asserted while doing the Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)
If you are suffering from migraine, insomnia, low or high blood pressure avoid Vrikshasana at all times. Those with high blood pressure can do this pose without raising their arms overhead, as this may further raise their blood pressure. You might have to practice this pose with a teacher if you have undergone major spine, abdomen, knee surgeries.
